The weather is warming up, the snow is melting and with the extra hour of daylight in the evenings, people are getting outside more.  If you feel like you’re crawling out of hibernation after a long winters nap, you may also be feeling the need to get healthier for the summer months ahead.  Dr. Michael Roizen, an expert on the Dr. Oz show, and the chief wellness officer at the Cleveland Clinic, offers these five keys to good health and wellness;

  1. Stress Reduction
  2. Proper Nutrition
  3. Physical Activity
  4. No Smoking
  5. Floss Everyday!
Did Dr. Roizen’s last recommendation surprise you a little?  After all, he’s a medical physician, not a dentist!  Maybe you’ve heard about the correlation between periodontal disease (gum disease) and heart disease, diabetes or low birth weight and preterm babies?  Research is still establishing a cause and effect relationship between these findings, but one explanation is to think of your body is a battle field.  If all your “soldiers” or immune cells are called to the front lines to fight gum disease, there aren’t as many soldiers to defend your heart, making it more susceptible to disease.  What this means is that when you floss you aren’t just protecting yourself against tooth decay and gum disease, but you are also taking positive steps towards whole body health.  So try adding floss into your daily routine.  It takes very little time, is inexpensive, and can make a huge difference in your overall well being.
